Things you didn't know you needed to know.

Sweet Briar, Transparency

My Take on Everett Stern’s Sweet Briar Press Conference

A number of people have asked what I thought of the press conference Everett Stern held on Sweet Briar’s campus Saturday.  What I appreciate most about Everett is he is on the right side of this fight. I think good things about anyone willing to lend their voice to the cause, especially when that voice brings media in tow.

I was disappointed that his presentation was based mainly on conjecture and things Dan and I have already uncovered.  He brought new allegations of nefarious financial transactions and relationships, but there was no hard evidence presented to support his assertions. Maybe he is developing that and will produce in his report next week.

But, I do challenge him to put his money where his mouth is. He said he is doing this for the same reason we are all doing this: It is the right thing to do.  I hope he is truly doing this on the merits, and is ready to get in the trenches and fight side by side with us. To me, that means whatever evidence he has will not be put behind his $100/month paywall.  None of us are in this for the money, and all of us have expended huge amounts of time and personal resources doing the right thing.  He said that we are going to have to research things on our own, and to that I say this: Newsflash  – we are a tad covered up researching things in our spare time.  We don’t have a team of professional investigators at our disposal. None of us are intelligence gurus. All of us could use a month of sleep and an army of housekeepers. Where laundry is concerned, many have reverted to college standards which incorporate “levels of cleanliness” in determining what can or cannot be worn on any given day.

If he is in, he needs to go all in like the rest of us.  If he is here for a little media splash, thanks, we truly appreciate his bringing some media attention to Sweet Briar, but please do not foster false expectations for these young college women who are emotionally exhausted. Some are worried if they will even be able to finish college.  If he is just doing this to get more monthly subscribers for his website, thanks but no thanks, we’ve got this. If information is hidden behind a paywall, it’s no better transparency than what we are dealing with now.  I recognize he has people to pay to develop the intelligence reports. Sometimes it is expensive to do the right thing.  Keep the information open, and put a donate button on the page.  If new tangible information giving evidence beyond conjecture is made available, I’ll throw a few bucks in the pot, as I am sure will others.

ALL OF THAT SAID, by nature, I am highly skeptical of all conspiracy theories, especially when such theories involve some element of the government.  I think such theories have little to no chance of actually coming to be.  Then again, I never thought Sweet Briar would announce it would close, so you never know.

Until I see some hard evidence, his theories of nefarious transactions involving the Department of Defense, Avaya, Rice’s wife and so on, go into my same file with the Marilyn Monroe Spas, Disney World, the golf course, and secret backroom deals with Liberty University:
